Manchester United were crowned FIFA Club World Cup Champion today after a second-half strike from Wayne Rooney handed 10-man Manchester United a deserved 1-0 victory over LDU Quito at the Yokohama Stadium Japan. It is the first time an English club have won the tournament in its expanded form and the second time United have been crowned best on the planet following their victory over Palmeiras in 1999.
“We’re the best team in the world with the best fans in the world,” said Rooney, after his second-half strike saw off the Ecuador challenge from LDU Quito in the FIFA Club World Cup. The Premier League champions dominated for long periods – despite playing almost the entire second period with 10 men after Nemanja Vidic’s dismissal for an elbow. Rooney picked up the Goldenball for player of the tournament with Cristiano Ronaldo voted runner-up.
