Placenta Previa

My wife is currently on 33rd week of pregnancy and is not expected to give birth until January next year. However, complication on her pregnancy this time might push forward the delivery date and the baby might born sooner rather than later. Doctors have identified the problem, which is in medical term known as Placenta Previa – a condition where the placenta lies low in the uterus and partially or completely covers the cervix. The placenta may separate from the uterine wall as the cervix begins to dilate (open) during labor. I have spent the last several weeks reading on this topic and I would like to share it with my readers. Hopefully, it can be a useful infromation for everyone.

According to American Pregnancy.Org, Placenta previa affects about 1 in 200 pregnant women in the third trimester of pregnancy. The most recent case that I know was the wife of my ex-collegue about 2 months ago. Allhamdullillah, she has managed to get through the procedure and she and her baby is now in very good conditions.

Once diagnosed, placenta previa will usually require bed rest for the mother and frequent hospital visits. In the case of my wife, she’s quite reluctant to stay in the hospital and wait. She might be small but her heart is very strong indeed. She determined to finish her exam, which will end this week. I keep some of her and baby’s clothes inside the car in case there are bleedings, which if happen will require her to be admitted to the hospital immediately.

Depending on the gestational age, steroid shots may be given to help mature the baby’s lungs. [To date, my wife has been give to shots by the hospital]. If the bleeding cannot be controlled, an immediate cesarean delivery is usually done regardless of the length of the pregnancy. Some marginal previas can be delivered vaginally, although complete or partial previas would require a cesarean delivery.

Luckily the mother is very strong inside..My cousin also had this problem during her 2nd trimester of pregnancy and somehow, she was been able to deliver normally as the placenta moved a little bit to the right place a few weeks before the due time.Take more rest, and always check up with the doctor.InsyaAllah, the baby and mother will be safe..

Ismail N: W’kum salam. Thank you nadinezuharra. Yes, there are cases where placenta move up a little bit and allows the mother to deliver normally. But that’s only when the placenta lies low in the uterus but not completely above the cervix, such as in my wife case. When the placenta in this position, the chances are almost 0% for the placenta to move up, thus making it impossible for normal delivery.
I admit that I’m very worry, especially with the fact that my wife is not staying at the hospital risking emergency delivery which could cause further problem such as infections, etc. I understand her reasoning and will not force her to stay in the hospital and I pray to the god that everything will be Ok. Insya-allah. Thanks for your kind words nadinezuharra. I’m glad you drop by.

I had an experience with this placenta previa. Luckily, my hubby is a doctor so he took care of me at home (malas nak duduk kat hospital, hehehe) until the time when I had to operated (3 weeks earlier than due date)

Anyway, hope everything is going to be fine with your wife and the baby.

Ismail N: Malas duduk di hospital? My wife also keep thinking abt that. Ya lah, what if tak beranak-ranak for sampai 4 – 5 weeks coz’ the baby pun masih kecil lagi. You’re lucky mcm tu. Maybe I shd ambik medic instead of law kalau cam ne. he he. :)
Thanks for the comment Tirana + thank you for dropping. Great to have you here.
